Bangladesh's army chief was summoned to the presidential palace on Monday following a day of renewed clashes between police and political activists two weeks before parliamentary elections. At least 50 people were injured and 30 detained on the second day of a transport blockade, called by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's multi-party alliance, which is boycotting the January 22 vote. Opposition activists in Bangladesh are expected to announce more street protests in the capital, Dhaka.

Three bombs within hours of each other rocked the southern Philippines on Wednesday, killing at least six people and wounding 27 others, officials said, amid warnings that Muslim militants may try to disrupt this weekend's Asian regional summits. Police said the blast occurred around 1000 GMT in General Santos city, a trade hub in the restive south, where Muslim and communist insurgents are fighting long-running rebellions.

Protests continue in La Paz Bolivia to demand the resignation of a governor allied with the conservative opposition. Thousand of protestors vowed to begin blockades of highways leading into Cochabamba. The protestors have set fire to the doors of the states capital and took control of the first floor.

Mexican forces have been sent in to the Tijuana area to battle the ongoing drug wars. Tijuana the city across the border from San Diego in California is a major entry point for drugs into the US. It has been hit by violence between rival drug gangs, with more than 300 killings in 2006.

The Awami League and its allies have called for a transport blockade throughout the country on 7 and 8 January to demand electoral reforms. At least 45 people have been killed and hundreds injured in political violence since the caretaker government took over. Political confrontations such as demonstrations, marches, and nation-wide strikes (hartals) are unpredictable and have potential for violence. There are no indications that the elections scheduled in the beginning of 2007, will be any different.
